The Secret Behind Confident Smiles
By Laura Holloway
At Exceptional Dentistry, Drs. Art and Kim Mowery have made it their life’s work to help people regain their confidence to smile and enjoy life again. Some people avoid smiling because of a simple gap in their teeth, stains or some minor chips, others because they inherited an unhealthy smile.
“I meet them every day;” says Dr. Kim Mowery, “people who try not to smile. Can you imagine that? If they are talking with someone and something is said that makes them smile, they actually have conscious and subconscious ways to prevent or cover up their smile. It seems very sad to me.”
“They will cover their mouth, turn away from the conversation, half-heartily grin or because they have been avoiding having anyone see their teeth for so long, just will not ever smile or laugh in public.”
“It sounds like an exaggeration to say that a confident smile could change someone’s life,” says Dr. Art Mowery, “but unless you have lived with an embarrassing smile, you really don’t know. Many times, after we complete a smile makeover for a client, they cry pure tears of joy. It is like they have been freed from a personal prison.”
General Dentistry
“The best way to avoid painful and unsightly dental problems later in life, “says Dr. Kim Mowery, “is to take care of your teeth now. At Exceptional Dentistry, we still take care of many families’ smiles. Our clients love our team and our team loves to see them walk in the door.”
Exceptional Dentistry clients also enjoy the ‘little extras’ they provide like, beverages, and DVD monitors over the dental chairs so they can watch their favorite movies or television shows during dental procedures. They also have a tranquility room with a massage chair and soft music where clients get a fantastic massage before or after their scheduled appointment if they wish.
“We treat everyone the same; as special guests visiting our office,” continued Dr. Kim Mowery. “We perform all of the routine procedures you expect such as teeth cleaning, x-rays, cavity filling, crowns and the treatment for gum disease. Although, one big difference in our office is that we do not use mercury. Our fillings and crowns are metal-free.”
“We feel that this is healthier for our clients and looks much better when they smile. You don’t see any of those ugly gray, black or silver fillings when you smile or laugh. The metal also expands and contracts with hot and cold foods and beverages. This allows the possibility for further decay under the fillings and the eventual cracking and breaking of teeth years after the dental work has been done.”
With the dental technology available today metal is out-dated. Resin fillings and crowns fit better and look more natural. They can be virtually undetectable to friends and family.
Neuromuscular Dentistry/TMJ and TMD
Tempromandibular joint disease (also known as TMD or TMJ) is a chronic degenerative disease that may take years to develop. It affects 75 million people at any one time. People who suffer from TMD have a structural imbalance in their jaw-to-skull relationship, caused by a bad bite. This disease causes the alteration of the position of the tempromandibular joint by placing excessive pressure on the joint and tissue around it.
This pressure twists the jaw into a strained position and further affects the muscles in the face, back, neck, and shoulders.
What are the symptoms?
Candidates for neuromuscular dentistry may experience any of the following symptoms on a regular basis:
- Headaches or migraines
- Unexplained loose teeth
- Worn, chipped or cracked teeth
- Cracking, chipping or breaking dental restorations
- Pain in teeth that seems to move around
- Neck, shoulder, or back pain
- Facial pain
- Clicking or grating sounds in the jaw joints
- Limited movement of locking jaw
- Numbness in your fingers and arms
- Congestion or ringing in the ears
“Neuromuscular dentistry has been one of the most rewarding aspects of our practice,” says Dr. Kim Mowery. “We are astounded by the number of people who suffer from head, neck, shoulder and back pain because of a misaligned bite. Our clients are equally amazed by the relief they have received through this treatment. It has been incredibly rewarding to help them.”
Cosmetic Dentistry
One of their most popular procedures is what Drs. Mowery call "Instant Orthodontics." Severely crooked teeth can be straightened in a few weeks rather than two years! The process employs veneers which are extremely durable, virtually painless to place, and easy to maintain. They are becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to wearing braces for years and are far more appealing then the radical option of dentures.
"Veneers are a very conservative option," says Art Mowery, DMD. "The more radical approach is what has been done in the past. New technology allows us to keep everything that is good about the underlying tooth as a foundation, install beautiful, natural looking and durable veneers, as opposed to removing large parts of tooth and replacing the area with metal."
The result is a spectacular smile that no one will know has been enhanced. By seamlessly blending elements of traditional and cosmetic dentistry, the Mowerys hope to see the distinction disappear altogether.
"We see patients from every walk of life and of all ages from children to senior adults," Dr. Art Mowery explains. "There is very little that we can't do to help everyone have healthier teeth and an improved smile. We want to be the one place they go for complete dental care from regular cleanings to more advanced cosmetic enhancements."
After years of tirelessly perfecting their state-of-the-art methods, Drs Art and Kim Mowery never tire of hearing how their artistry has changed peoples' lives. Their patient scrapbook is filled with hundreds of satisfied clients' amazing "before and after" photos.
"We've been a part of so many wonderful transformations," says Dr. Kim Mowery. "I never tire of seeing patients beaming from ear to ear as they leave the office. It's like they're smiling for the first time.”
While patients do receive traditional dental services at Exceptional Dentistry, there is the opportunity to go far beyond the norm in both in what is available and how it is delivered.
The Mowerys continue their quest for the latest in cosmetic dentistry knowledge at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Kim Mowery is a featured Lecturer and Dr. Art Mowery is actually one of the directors for the institute.
And although the Mowerys teach and lecture internationally, their most important endorsements come from their elated satisfied clients. Some of their photos and testimonials are available for viewing at www.ExceptionalDentistry.org.
