Discover The Connection Between Good Dental Hygiene & Your Memory

It’s easy to think of brushing, flossing, and dental checkups as habits that only protect your teeth and gums. But research suggests your oral health may also be connected to something much bigger: your brain.

A study highlighted by the American Academy of Neurology in the summer of 2023 found a link between poor dental health and shrinkage in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that plays an important role in memory. While this doesn’t mean gum disease or tooth loss directly causes memory problems, it does add to a growing body of evidence showing that what happens in your mouth may affect the rest of your body in meaningful ways.

Why the Hippocampus Matters

The hippocampus helps your brain form and store short-term memories. It also plays a role in learning and organizing information. When this area shrinks, memory and thinking skills can be affected.

Researchers have long known that hippocampal atrophy, or shrinkage, is often associated with cognitive decline. That’s why scientists are so interested in anything that may influence the health of this part of the brain. The 2023 study looked at older adults over several years and found that both gum disease and tooth loss were associated with changes in hippocampal volume.

What the Study Found

One of the most interesting parts of the research is that it wasn’t just about how many teeth someone had. The condition of the gums mattered too.

For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was linked to faster brain shrinkage. But for people with more severe gum disease, keeping more teeth was also associated with faster shrinkage. That may sound surprising at first, but it points to an important takeaway: it’s not only about keeping your natural teeth, but also about keeping the supporting tissues around them healthy.

In other words, healthy teeth and healthy gums go hand in hand. Simply holding onto teeth affected by advanced gum disease may not be enough to support overall health.

How Oral Health May Affect Memory

Scientists are still learning exactly how the mouth and brain influence each other, but inflammation is one likely explanation. Gum disease is an inflammatory condition, and chronic inflammation can place stress on the body over time.

There is also concern that harmful oral bacteria may contribute to broader health issues when gum disease is left untreated. While more research is still needed, these findings reinforce something dental professionals have said for years: the mouth is not separate from the rest of the body.

Taking care of your smile may be one more way to support your long-term wellness.

Everyday Habits That Help

The good news is that protecting your oral health doesn’t have to be complicated. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist regularly are simple steps that can make a real difference. Routine checkups can catch early signs of gum disease before they become more serious, and professional cleanings help remove plaque and tartar that brushing alone can miss.

Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding tobacco products can also help keep your gums healthier.

A healthy smile may be doing more for you than you realize.
