You probably already know that oral bacteria can be extremely harmful to your smile. Not only is it responsible for things like cavities and gum disease, but recent studies have shown that one particular strain called Streptococcus anginosus could also cause potentially fatal brain abscesses. Here’s what you need to know.
How Oral Bacteria Can Affect the Brain
While the connection between oral bacteria and the brain may not seem obvious, a recent study published in the Journal of Dentistry revealed that of 87 people admitted to a hospital with brain abscesses, those who had no clear cause for the condition were three times more likely to have high levels of oral bacteria in their lesions than others.
How Can I Eliminate Oral Bacteria?
Although there is no way to completely prevent the development of a brain abscess, there are still many things you can do to reduce the levels of oral bacteria in your mouth, including:
- Brush your teeth twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste.
- Floss daily.
- Visit your dentist every six months for your regular exam and cleaning appointments.
Furthermore, be sure to avoid any bad oral habits like smoking or vaping, as these can increase inflammation and dry mouth, both of which can contribute to gum disease and the proliferation of dangerous bacteria in the mouth and throughout the body.
The Importance of Treating Tooth Infections
Should you develop a tooth infection, be sure to act quickly to treat it. Although it may not hurt initially or cause any immediate symptoms, it could eventually require a root canal, a tooth extraction, or like in the cases of the patients in the study above, cause a potentially fatal brain abscess.
Remember, although brain abscesses are very rare, the risks to your oral and overall health from leaving a tooth infection untreated are not. Thus, if you are experiencing a dental emergency like a tooth infection, seek help from your emergency dentist as soon as possible! It could save your smile and maybe even your life!
