Will My Upcoming Dental Check-Up Hurt?

Whether you’ve never been to the dentist before or it’s been so long that you’ve forgotten what to expect at your upcoming exam and cleaning, it’s normal to be a little nervous. In fact, it’s not uncommon for patients to be a worried about this treatment being painful. But the good news is that your preventive check-up is nothing to be afraid of. Here’s what will happen, and how one way your dentist can make it much more comfortable!

Do Dental Cleanings Hurt?

Sometimes, when a patient sits down in the dental chair and sees the tray of cleaning tools nearby, they become a little bit nervous. After all, those metal devices used to scrape away built-on tartar can look intimidating. The good news, however, is that your dental hygienist is well trained to use them carefully and safely, so the only one who has any reason to be afraid is the bad bacteria in your mouth that she or he is about to clear away!

That’s because these tools are designed to remove only the dangerous deposits that could eventually cause cavities and gum disease. The enamel of your teeth will protect the inner nerves, so this step shouldn’t be painful for you at all.

Do Dental Exams Hurt?

The exam portion of your dental check-up should be painless as well. During this time, your dentist will take a closer look at your teeth and gums, as well as your jaw and your neck to screen for oral cancer. All of this is done gently and should not cause any discomfort. If any pain is felt during the examination such as jaw pain or a toothache, your dentist will work with you to find a solution and develop a treatment plan to address it.

How Can I Make Dental Appointments More Comfortable?

If you’re nervous about your upcoming dental appointment, you’re not alone. In fact, about 73 percent of adults in the United States report some level of dental phobia. The good news is that your dentist has a solution that can help. Sedation dentistry allows you to receive a sedative medication (either nitrous oxide, or an oral or intravenous (IV) sedative) during your appointment to help keep you feeling calm and comfortable. Your dentist will discuss your options depending on your level of anxiety, but these solutions were designed to make it easier for nervous or frightened patients to relax long enough to undergo routine, restorative, and emergency dental care.  To learn more about this option and see if you’re a good candidate, be sure to discuss it with your dental team when booking your appointment so preparations can be made in advance.

Remember, while a dental exam and cleaning shouldn’t hurt, it’s not uncommon to be afraid that it might. However, if you find that fear holding you back from getting the care that you need, speak to your dentist about sedation dentistry today and protect your smile without the anxiety.
